Rantalan Muatila
Rantala Farm
In spring 1935 my grandfather Pekka Pohjolainen was travelling from Mustinlahti to Kuopio by bus in order to buy an apartment for his family. However, in the bus, his neighbour had told him about a farm for sale in Tuusniemi.
At the time, the farm was owned by the family Hiivala. My grandfather was really interested in the farm, so he made an oral agreement with his neighbour in the bus to buy the farm. The neighbour told the family Hiivala that the farm had been sold.
My father Reino was born at the farm in 1943. He took over the farm in 1964. The farm and the house have been expanded little by little. Milking was the main activity of the farm until autumn 1998, when my parents decided to give up milking. From then on, the the fields were rented to a local farmer.
In March 2025, we decided to make a generational handover, and I took over the farm. From now on, I will operate my business at the farm. Even though there will be again animals at the farm, I’m not planning to reintroduce any cows there.
